The concept of ALARP (As Low As Reasonably Practicable) is to confirm that the project, activity or technology under consideration contain the sufficiency of control measures to reduce the level of risk to the maximum practical leveI.

The main variables of this process are risk reduction measures, which are considered from the point of view of identified hazardous factors, the cost of implementing measures, coupled with time, difficulties in implementation and other features.

ALARP assessment and demonstration is carried out by a team of experts and consists of at least three stages:

  • identification of hazardous factors using the bow-tie technique;

  • identifying risk reduction measures, and

  • assessment of selected risk reduction measures.

Demonstration of ALARP is ultimately achieved by balancing the magnitude of risk reduction once a control measure has been implemented relative to the effort expended.
